Michael Markieta

Michael takes an integrated data driven approach to solving complex spatial problems by applying GIS, programming and web design to manage and visualize complex geographic data. Being a wise coder, an artist and lifelong learner Michael pushes the boundaries to develop mapping solutions that are in lockstep with today’s bleeding edge technologies. He is most known for his experience in developing solutions with web-based mapping APIs like Mapbox, Leaflet, OpenLayers and Google Maps. Michael also has experience in many typical applications for GIS, including spatial and geostatistical analysis; network-based analysis for transportation modelling; multi-criteria analysis for predictive statistical modelling; and environmental terrain modelling for view shed analysis. His desktop GIS experience includes both commercial products such as ESRI ArcGIS, Pitney Bowes MapInfo and Safe Software FME, as well as open-source software like QGIS.

Arup Singapore Digital Office Map

Full Stack Web Application

This digital office map is built using Mapbox vector tiles, hooked up to Lync Server to obtain live Lync status and user profile details per user in the office, as well as autocomplete search functionality to help you find a colleague in the office. Written in vanilla JavaScript with few dependencies, this office map is utilized most by business administrators who manage the office layout and workstation assignment. The stack includes a LokiDB which stores all of our staff details, as well as spatial data loaded in as GeoJSON files to be consumed by the Mapbox GL JS API.

Daylighting Engineering Data

Full Stack Web Application

With over 22 million assets, our client was seeking a better way to access, understand and use the data that was locked away in their databases. I am the lead developer for this full stack web application, focusing primarily on the front end, while guiding the developers in charge of the middleware, back end API and database layers. I am also the solution architect for the project, systems operator and responsible for the deployment of this highly confidential project to the client's private cloud. The stack contains an Angular web application running on NodeJS with Express middleware, connecting to a Django Rest Framework API which fetches data for the application from a PostgreSQL database.

Dashboard for Major International Airport 25-Year Masterplan

Lead designer and developer of a data analytics dashboard that is used to analyze and review a multi-billion dollar masterplan for one of the world's major international airports. Combining bleeding edge technologies in web mapping and UI design, I created a dashboard that allows the client to review various options in their 25-year masterplan. The dashboard makes the rich masterplanning datasets accessible and disectable, allowing for better informed decision making.

Maps can be used to visualize a variety of geospatial patterns, including urban form as seen in this gallery. The Geographies of Urban Form is a presentation of how metropolises around the world have been settled. Overcoming physical barriers like mountains and rivers, road networks are mankind’s most expansive structure. They dictate the way in which we communicate about, perceive and navigate a city. This collection of maps isolates the road network and tests the apparent connection between our knowledge or experience of a city in relation to its urban form.

Smart Health coLAB

Creative Data Science

On the 16th of May, UP Singapore put on a hackathon with the theme of smart health which had an attendance of over 50 people. One of the goals for hackathon particpants was to play with data from the DEX data and API library to create new use cases and demonstrate how the role of Smart Health addresses a change in demographics, lifestyle and disease. This visualization displays the relationships among 30 health and lifestyle variables of 800 staff members of an undisclosed company.

Web GIS for Singapore MRT Projects

As the GIS lead for Arup's MRT projects, I manage the GIS database that consolidates all of the spatial data for the planning of various construction and feasibility stage MRT lines. By combining all engineering drawings, survey data and GIS data in one location, my system is used by team members from all disciplines to quickly retrieve information for any part of the relevant MRT project.

Transport Planning Data Analysis Dashboard

A series of dashboards were built to monitor the results of traffic count and travel time surveys. These dashboards were used to quickly identify erroneous data that had been submitted by the surveyors, and to assist in the decision making process for building additional vehicular capacity near to a new commercial development.

Big Data Visualization

Designed and published what would become the most read story of the day on the BBC, followed by an in-depth feature in BBC Future Magazine and broadcast coverage on BBC World News and BBC Global News Bulletin. Recognizing its impact, Arup hosted the visualization on it’s home page. The Toronto Star and international outlets including Daily Mail, Fox News and Metro International also picked up the story, not to mention numerous online and print publications across the aerospace, design and branding industries. The story went viral with 35000 shares on the BBC story, 3000 ‘likes’ on its Facebook post and more than 5500 Twitter mentions in the first three days.
